Welcome back to school!

Hello, Sweet MSA Community,

At the MSA Town Hall last night, I shared some thoughts about the year starting with an impressive statistic that bears repeating: students involved in the arts are five times more likely to stay in school, earn academic awards, and be recognized for leadership.* That’s the power of arts education—and it’s at the heart of what we do at Marin School of the Arts and Novato High.

This year, our theme is:
🎯 Engagement – Engaging MSA, Engaging Novato High
We’re encouraging students to show up—not just physically, but with their minds, hearts, and creativity. That means taking risks, trying new things, and embracing the growth that comes from feedback. As Maya Angelou once said,  “You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.”

Active engagement in the arts builds confidence, communication, and collaboration—skills that matter far beyond the studio or stage. And parents, your involvement strengthens that growth. When you show up to exhibitions, performances, or conversations, you’re reinforcing your student’s passion and potential.

This fall, you may notice some changes—new teachers, different class structures, or shifts in rehearsal formats. These adjustments are intentional and thoughtful, rooted in student and family feedback, and guided by our shared values:

  • Increasing access and representation – Arts for All

  • Elevating student leadership through real engagement

  • Defining and supporting excellence in teaching and learning

  • Ensuring every student feels happy, proud, and seen in their MSA experience

So if something feels new or unexpected, we invite you to take a breath, ask questions, and stay open. As one parent reminded me this summer: “If you’re coasting, you’re going downhill.”

We’re not coasting—we’re moving forward, together.

Let’s commit to a year of curiosity, courage, creativity, and connection. We’re so glad you’re here.

With love and excitement for the first day of school tomorrow,

Michelle Cortez
