Learning, Growing, Trying New Things

Hello, Fabulous Artsy Community,

I have another quote for you this week—this time from Neil Gaiman, the writer of the comic book series The Sandman and many novels including Coraline:

“I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world.  You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re Doing Something.”

In the second week of this new year, I am excited to make plans, expand traditions, and push ourselves a little as we prepare for a stellar semester full of 20th Anniversary MSA celebrations. I’m also fully impressed by students committed to learning, growing, and trying new things.

Like awesome junior Megan Wien who has taken on the role of Intern Volunteer Coordinator for all of the MSA Foundation. Megan met with alum family Volunteer Extraordinaire Denise Castelluci via Zoom during Office Hours today and has ALREADY created an easy to use sign up genius for families to help out during MSA Audition Weekend. (Help her out and consider signing up here – if you’ve never volunteered before – maybe try a new thing!)

Another group of students eager to DO SOMETHING showed up for our MSA Student Leadership Council today at lunch. Wooed in by pizza but sticking around to give valuable input, students weighed in on a school-wide Spirit Week celebrating MSA @ 20 and plans for an expanded MSA Showcase (save the date! It’s April 1 this year!).

We may have a lot going on, we may miss an email or call or assignment; we certainly make a few mistakes here and there, but we are living and learning and connecting and willing to change ourselves and our world. It’s a beautiful thing, and I hope you join us in at least some of our efforts this semester. We could use your help.

With love and gratitude for our creative communities,

Michelle Cortez

P.S. MSA current families – We will present a parent version of our Semester 2 preview at MSA Town Hall #3 – now scheduled for Zoom next Wednesday, Jan 18 at 6pm. It’s a short 30 minutes before Booster meetings and meant to be accessible from home for many. Save the date and look for details and links in a special email next Monday. See you on the small screen again!
