Hello Lovely Humans,
During my classroom rounds this morning, I stepped in to Creative Writing and had a chance to congratulate the talented Lilly Braly who was recently crowned California state champion of Poetry Out Loud.
“California is so big – what an accomplishment!” I told her.
“It’s a part of her character arch” quipped Hendrix from the next table.
“I know – I’m excited! Nationals are in DC.” Lilly shared. “I’m going up against Texas – that’s where I moved from”
“You left there. Go scorched earth, Lilly. You got this.” Frances offered.
Witty, supportive, sweet champs—that’s our Creative Writers.

On another stop in Dance, Foundation dancers showed me their hip hop, jazz and Bollywood numbers and shared their commentary. In Digital Arts, students were working on modeling their own image with digital tools. These classrooms were also filled with laughter, experimentation, and charm.
The MSA team brings all this good work to life one night each spring—our annual MSA Showcase—this year held on Saturday, April 18th. It’s all of our programs in one sweet event and you can be a part of it as a volunteer by signing up tonight at the link below. Set yourself up to hear the quips of creative kids doing what they love with and for those they care about. It’s a community labor of love.
With care and affection for all our brilliant parts,
Michelle Cortez
P.S. No need to wait for Showcase—there’s Emerging Voices on Thursday and the Hues of Fashion show on Saturday. See you there!
