MSA is proud to host Paraguayan music teacher Favio Chavez and his Landfill Recycled Orchestra of Cateura for performances this week in the Center for the Arts. Students from NHS and elementary schools enjoyed performances on Tuesday (above). MSA Honors Dancers led a dance warm up with elementary students before the performance.

The youth orchestra from Paraguay performs on musical instruments made from scrap materials collected from Asunción’s Cateura landfill. Formed in 2012, the orchestra has performed around the world, sharing the stage with renowned musicians like Stevie Wonder and Metallica, among others.
Chavez holds music lessons with the children and young people who live in conditions of vulnerability and social exclusion and transforms their lives through music. Learn more about how art has changed a community in the 60 Minutes report below, which won an Emmy in 2013 for its reporting.
