Student Musicians Work with Finnish Rock Star

Janne Warman, keyboardist with Metal band “Children of Bodom” from Finland, spent the morning with MSA Music students Monday, November 6, during a stop on the band’s North American Tour. Longtime friend Howard Gersh, MSA Visual Arts teacher, arranged for Janne’s visit and spent the morning hosting the melodic metal band star.

Janne sat in with Jazz Bands for first and second period and then moved on to the Rock Band classes for third and fourth periods. “This place is really incredible, it’s great to be here,” Janne said of the chance to offer bands feedback after hearing each perform.

“I was a jazz kid and then a friend asked if I wanted to try playing in a metal band and I love it. It shows you should be open to anything, you never know where it’s going to take you,” Janne shared with MSA students.

Children of Bodom (COB) incorporates myriad musical styles into their sound and are labeled as “melodic death metal,” “thrash metal,” “symphonic black metal,” and “neoclassical metal.” Their mix of melodic hooks and instrumental acrobatics have positioned the band as one of the leading voices of metal music’s new generation.

The group is led by superstar frontman/guitarist Alexi Laiho, who was voted “Best Metal Guitarist” by readers of Guitar World magazine. COB albums consistently chart on the American Billboard Top 200 and three consecutive albums hit number one on Finnish album charts. They are one of Finland’s bestselling artists of all time with more than 250,000 records sold there.
